Why today? ”At the behest of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY), in 1971 the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day”. The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. This was the culmination of a massive, peaceful civil rights movement by women that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world’s first women’s rights convention, in Seneca Falls, New York.” More at: NATIONAL WOMEN’S HISTORY PROJECT

What about tomorrow? Every day is Women’s Equality Day…or should be! Do something to move the dial…make it personal by helping a girl dream bigger…make it political by emailing your Senator about voting for the Paycheck Fairness Act…make it loud by writing a blog on how far we still have to travel…make it sisterly by mentoring a rising star…make it creative by telling the story so others understand…make it fun because we need that….make it happen by joining one of the amazing efforts to change the world. Share! Learn! Act! Read Sunday 8/23/09 NY Times Magazine about why empowering women is the issue of our century. Of course, sign on to the EPCNYC effort which is ramping up for the next round!

50/50 by 2020 was the battle cry last night when 200 energized (mostly) women gathered at the Julia Miles Theatre to not just talk about creating parity for women in theatre….but to chart a course of action. Panelists enlightened and inspired, participants committed to individually and collectively act, and the organizers (League of Professional Theatre Women, New Perspectives Theatre Company, and Women’s Project) taped the session and captured the outpouring of ideas. EPCNYC and NYWA was front and center when our Natatia Griffith shared our campaign and her passion for equity. Email Joan Firestone jdf246@aol.com if you can help!

Can you help with this blog? Let me know. We have great plans but limited resources. Thanks! BEV
